This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like standard physical horror, but inside Together exists a profound contemplation about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their new home, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a strange force takes hold of the duo. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and relies on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and fully committing to another person, the allegory never feels overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
