Users Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing such medications need to be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to original weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors believe the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural management.
